State true or false:

The British thought surveys were important for effective administration.

True

Why did the British pursue official documents?

One important source is the official records of the British administration. The British believed that the act of writing was important. Every instruction, plan, policy, decision, agreement and investigation had to be clearly written up. Once this was done, things could be properly studied and dated.

What is the problem with the periodisation of Indian history that James Mill offers?

■ James Mill placed Indian history into three periods- Hindu, Muslim, and British, based on the religion of the rulers.

This was unfair as there were many other religions present at the same time.

Also, not necessarily, all the rulers at the time had the same faith.

Mill thought that all Asian societies were at a lower level of civilisation than Europe.

He believed that, religious intolerance, cast taboos and superstitions dominated social life before the British came to India.
