Did the provisional government rule Russia well?

The Soviet = as Provisional Government was being formed, the Petrograd Soviet was taking shape in a different part of same building. Workers and soldiers sent representatives to form a soviet to look after their interests




Dual Power = Provisional Government was accepted but could carry out decisions only if the Soviet agreed. Most people in favour as allowed freedom of the press, freedom of speech, right to strike, end to social discriminations and death penalty.

What were the two big issues that faced the Provisional Government after the Revolution?



ISSUE 1 (WAR):


- decided to continue the war as nobody wanted to be defeated by the Germans and they wanted to keep Allies (France and Britain).


BUT


- soldiers began to desert and food and duel remained short



ISSUE 2 (LAND):


- peasants could at last own their own land but Provisional Gov would not give it to them. Provis. Gov. belieived free-for-all land would lead to disintegration of the army (soldiers would desert to get their share)





How did the Bolsheviks seize power? – What happened when Lenin returned?

he made a speech demanding that…


- there should be no co-operation with the Provisional Government


- the war should end immediately


- land should be given to the peasants


- Soviets should take power




What was Lenin’s speech later called?

APRIL THESIS = calling for a second revolution in which the workers take power








What were the July Days?


- Only the Bolsheviks opposed the war



- Summer 1917 more people became opposed to war as shortages continued





- July Kerensky launched a major attack = terrible defeat – 16/17 July demonstrations against the war



- people turned to Bolsheviks but they were not ready to take power



- Kerensky used opportunity to produce evidence that Lenin was in the pay of the Germans




- Kerensky became Prime Minister



Who was afforded a second chance in Autumn 1917?


Kerensky appointed Kornilov as head of the army and Kornilov decided it was time to deal with the revolutionaries once and for all and to establish strong government in Russia. He ordered his Cossack troops to march on Petrograd. People of Petrograd panicked






What was it about the timings that meant the Bolsheviks could now seize power?


- support was at an all time high


- overall majority


-situation in rest of Russia was degenerating fast – peasants were seizing land


- soldiers deserting army


- food rationed and prices rising fast



- Lenin sent messages to Bolsheviks ordering them to seize power but leading Bolsheviks refused to carry out his instructions.


How did the Bolsheviks seize power?


- Headquarters in the Smolny Institute - from here Trotsky organized take over of the city on 7 November with small groups of Bolshevik Red Guards



- no secret – newspapers wrote articles and Bolsheviks distributed leaflets



- Drunk Kerensky rushed around the city to find troops to support him



- Red Guards took control bridges, railway stations, power stations…State Bank!




- nobody took much notice thinking that Kerensky would defeat them when he arrived with his army. BUT he had fled the city in a car lent by the American Embassy



What was the Storming of the Winter Palace?


- very little damage done to Palace



- 9pm the Aurora ( a ship who supported the Bolsheviks fired a shot that started the attack)




- Red guards stormed the Palace and the Provisional army and cadets put up little resistance
