De Lome Letter
Spanish officials in Cuba are trying to send a letter back to Spain. American officials got a hold of the letter and and the letter gets published in American newspapers. The letter says “McKinley is a weak and cowardly leader and that Spain has no intentions of letting Cuba be free”
U.S.S. Maine

The U.S.S. Maine was sent to Cuba before America got the De Lome Letter. America gets upset at Spain and a few days later the U.S.S. Maine explodes. (Looking back the explosion was probably not even Spain’s fault but instead was a faulty engine.) America blames Spain and uses this as an excuse to go to war.

Emilio Aguinaldo
Philippine leader who helped kick the Spanish out and believed the end of the Spanish rule would mean independence for his country. Americans come into the Phillipines and Emilio leads guerrilla warfare against the US from 1989-1902.
Rough Riders
lead by Teddy Roosevelt. Calvary unit that fought in the Spanish American war.
Spanish-American War
All of Spain’s colonies are in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Cuba starts to rise up and rebel and America goes in to help them. U.S.S. Maine and the De Lome Letter happen. The war lasts 3 months. Not a lot of Americans die and we win which makes it a “Splendid Little War”. US wins and obtains the Phillippines, Puerto Rico, and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The rest of Cuba was given it’s independence.
Philippine-American War
Americans move in when the Spanish leave and the Phillipines want their independence. Guerrilla warfare is brought upon. 4,300 Americans die and 2,000 Filipinos die. USA still doesn’t give them independence until after WWII.
Panama Canal
One of the biggest construction projects in history. Creation of this helped goods flow east to west.
Teddy Roosevelt
president. Ran for the Bull Moose Party.
Open Door Policy
McKinley says the European countries that are in China should open the door to China and allow us to trade with China. The European countries told us no and the plan was a bust but it gave us good relations with China. Made it look like we were on their side.
Great White Fleet
Teddy Roosevelt sends 16 battle ships to Japanese ports and to Japan to show the Japanese not to mess with the USA. Plants the seeds for WWII because makes the Japanese angry with the USA.

Wisconsin Idea
Wisconsin was considered the “laboratory of democracy.” The Wisconsin idea was: 1) sanitation and factory safety. 2) improved higher education 3) state income tax 4) direct primary 5) REFERENDUM – voters vote on laws and amendments RECALL –states can kick their legislatives out of office. 6) lowered railroad rates and raised railroad taxes
Bob Lafollette
“Fighting” Bob Lafollette. While Lafollette was senator he pushed for the direct election of US Senator and a federal income tax.
WCTU
“Women’s Christian Temperance Union” Largest female reform society of late nineteenth century; it moved from opposing sale of liquor to demanding the right to vote for women. After women won the right to vote they sort of fizzled out.
Woodrow Wilson
democrat presidential candidate in the election of 1912. The only reason Wilson wont the presidency was that the republicans split their votes. Wilson was the first Southern democrat elected after the civil war. Wilson did a lot of things for reform.
Economy of the 1920s
There was a lot of economic growth during the 20’s. Economic growth happened because of purchase of consumer goods (cars, furniture, and appliances) Americans afforded these in three ways 1) They were making more money 2) They bought on credit (allowing them to purchase goods they could not usually afford but also wracking up debt) 3) Companies began mass producing things.
Jack Johnson
black man. Heavy weight champ for 10 years. Because of the racism in America, the white underestimated him. He won and would only fight white people because he knew that if he fought another black man he would lose.
Pancho Villa
Attacked Columbus, New Mexico and killed 19 Americans in hopes that the US would invade Mexico so that he can become the new leader of Mexico. When troops are sent into Mexico they can’t find Villa and no one ends up fighting.
Lusitania
British cruise liner docked in New York. A German u-boat sinks this boat because this the USA is shipping arms to Great Britiain
Zimmerman Telegram
Sent from Germany intended to go to Mexico. Great Britian somehow gets this letter and sends it to the USA. The letter says “Mexico if you go to war with USA you will get all the land you lost in the Spanish-American War (California, Texas, etc.)” This letter is what puts us into the war
Invasion of Mexico
Wilson doesn’t like the leader of Mexico so the US wants to invade Mexico to get rid of the leader. We were about to declare war with Mexico when Brazil and Argentina stopped us. This is when Pancho Villa kills the 19 people in New Mexico. The USA invades Mexico looking for Pancho Villa and when the USA can’t find Villa, we end up fighting spanish forces.
Treaty of Versailles
The leaders of Great Britian and France wanted revenge against Germany and wanted 1) Germany to solely take blame of WWI. 2) Won’t let Germany build a military 3) Pay millions in reperations so they can’t fight back.[This treaty made Germany angry and planted the seeds of WWII and makes Germany turn towards Hitler]

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s campain promise, to combat the Great Depression with a “New deal for the American people” Guaranteed “every man…. A right to make a comfortable living”
New Deal critics
Upton Sinclair called for the state to use idle factories and land in cooperative ventures that would provide jobs for the unemployed. Huey Long was a US senator and used his power to build roads, schools, and hospitals and to increase the tax burden on Louisianna’s oil companies. He wanted the confiscation of most of the wealth of the richest Americans in order to finance an immdediate grant of $5000 and a guaranteed job and annual income for all citizens. Dr. Francis Townsend won support for a plan by which the government would make a monthly payment of $200 to older Americans, with the requirement that they spend it immediately. He said this would boost the economy. (These men were all unhappy with how slowly the New Deal was working and also they all helped spark the Second New Deal)

“The Agriculture Adjustment Act” authorized the federal government to try to raise farm prices by setting production quotas for major crops and paying farmers to plant less. Succeeded in raising farm prices and incomes but not all farmers benefited.
FDIC
“Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation” a government system that insured the accounts of individual depositors.
CPI
“Committee on Public Information” promoted the war. Sent out men who talked about why you should support the war. This WW1 organization gave birth to modern advertising.
NRA
“National Recovery Act” which would work with groups of business leaders to establish industry codes that set standards for output, prices, and working conditions.

“Civilian Conservation Corps” Set unemployed young men to work on projects like forrest preservation, flood control, and the improvement of national parks and wildlife preserves.
WPA
“Works Progress Administration” Part of the second New Deal, it provided jobs for millions of the unemployed on construction and art projects.
TVA

Battle of the Somme

This WW1 battle resulted in 58,000 deaths in one day. British bomb the German trenches for 7 days at all hours. This doesn’t kill all the Germans and when the bombing stop the Germans and British start fighting.
