World Colombian Exposition

-held in 1893

•consisted of more than 400 artistically constructed buildings, the exhibits in these building centered on Americans’ economic achievements

Spanish- American War

- (1898) War fought between the US and Spain in Cuba and the Philippines. It lasted less than 3 months and resulted in Cuba's "independence" as well as the US annexing Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. It was started in part by the influence of yellow journalism after the explosion and sinking of the USS Maine.

Treaty of Paris

- Spain accepted Cuban independence American companies gained control of sugar plantations.


–Called for Cuba to allow a U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, pay back war debts to the United States


-United States won Puerto Rico & Guam

Panama Canal

-1904-1914 The U.S. aided a Panamanian revolt against Columbia, which wouldn’t lend the land to the U.S.

•Caused by imperialism, sparked by Assassination of Ferdinand.


•A Serbian nationalist assassinated A.F. Ferdinand, who was heir to the Austria-Hungary throne.The assassin believed that Bosnia, at the time an Austria-Hungary possession, should belong to Serbia.


-Result: Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia & bc Serbia was allied w/Russia allied w/a bunch of other counties

Zimmerman Telegram

-The Zimmerman telegram was a top secret, coded message sent by German Zimmerman to Mexico in January 1917

-In January 1917 the Germans announced that the submarines would sink without warning any ship in the waters around Britain
