Connective tissue can be divided into what two components?

1. The extracellular matrix

2. The cells that secrete it

All connective tissue (except blood cells/hemopoietic cells) is derived from what germ layer?

Are mesenchymal cells found in adults?

Mesenchyme / embryonic CT

Mesenchyme is in embryonic development but not adults except in niches.

What is one way to distinguish between dense and loose connective tissue?

The difference is one of degree.

Loose CT has fine collagen fibers.

Dense CT has large bands of collagen fibers.

What is tendon and cartilage made of? How does form and function relate?

Dense REGULAR

The parallel arrangement of fibers allow them to withstand great force in specific directions.

The functional part of the tissue is known as ________ while the connective tissue is known as _________.

Parenchyma

Stroma

What are the four different types of collagen and where are they found?

Type I - tendon, bone, dentin

Type II - cartilage

Type III - reticular fibers of lymphatic, muscle tissue and blood vessels, lamina propria underlying epithelium

Type IV - basal lamina

What is ground substance? Name its components.

Ground substance consists of gigantic proteoglycan complexes that fill the space between collagen fibers.

Specifically the proteoglycan has protein groups called chondroitin sulfate and keratan sulfate. These stick onto a core protein which is anchored to hyaluronic acid by link proteins.

The sulfate groups impart a negative charge, making this molecule well hydrated to form a gel.
