Associated with ulcers. It is believed that 20% of adults in the US are infected and that number increases with age. Once infected, it persists for years in the stomach. 10-20% of infected individuals develop ulcers 90% of stomach cancers are infected with this bacteria (very few that are infected get stomach cancer) |

Capable of surviving in extreme acidic envioronments. Produces urease which neutralizes the acid in the stomach allowing it to survive. Has powerful flagella which it uses to corkscrew past the mucous in to the epithelial cells. |

Believed to cause 90% of duodenal ulcers and up to 80% of gastric ulcers. Transmission is unknown, but thought to be oral-fecal. Treatment is 2 antibiotics coupled with something that will limit stomach acid (so ulcers will heal) |
