Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori, is a spiral shaped bacteria. H. pylori is a gram-negative bacteria because of the thin cell wall, and the pink color it has when the bacteria is given the gram stain test. H. pylori usually has about six to eight flagella at one end of the bacteria.

H. pylori infections are responsible for gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), and the majority of ulcers in someone’s stomach and small intestine. If not treated, gastritis can turn into gastric cancer or gastric MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) lymphoma.

H. pylori has a higher chance of affecting people who live in a developing country, a crowded condition, without clean water, or with someone who has H. pylori. H. pylori is a bacteria that can affect people of all ages. Someone can get H. pylori if they come in contact with the saliva, vomit, or feces of a person that’s infected. Some examples are, eating food that someone took a bite of, cleaning up after someone sick, etc. There is also a chance of getting this infection if you eat

Before you take this test, your doctor will ask you to stop taking antibiotics and/or acid-suppressing drugs, as they can interfere with the test results. For the stool test, it looks for foreign proteins in your stool that are related to H. pylori. A scope test isn’t usually used just for an H. pylori diagnosis because it requires the patient to be sedated, a tube with a tiny camera to go down the throat, and the doctor to remove tissue samples.
