What is the Brain hypothesis?
brain gives rise to the mind
What is the Babinski sign?
Babinski sign: touch newborn babies foot and toes spread → sign of neurological health (connection to spinal cord is good). After 8 months this doesn’t occur b/c brain is controlling it, and toes will come together
What is the snouting reflex?
Snouting reflex: touch babies upper lip → they suck. After 6 months it will go away. If someone does this they have frontal lobe damage.
What does dualism mean?
Dualism: brain and mind are so materially different that they cannot be the same thing. Brain and mind are two separate thing.
What does Materialism claim?
The brain is the material of the mind → brain hypothesis
What is Phrenology?
belief that when one area of the brain is stronger it will get bigger (ex. Better mother = bigger maternity area of the brain and you can feel a bump on the head)
What is Cognitive neuropsychology?
trying to study the brain using those that have sustained brain injury
Where is Broca's area?
Left inferior frontal lobe
Where is Wernicke's area?
Left superior frontal lobe
What happens in Broca's aphasia?
Inability to speak fluently
What happens in Wernicke's aphasia?
Impaired comprehension, fluent speak
Which brain part of Patient H.M. was removed?
Bilateral medial temporal lobe -> hippocampus
Where is hippocampus located?
medial temporal lobe
What does stimulation of frontal lobe do?
twitch, motor/premotor → movements
What does stimulation of parietal lobe do?
Somatosensory/visual hallucinations
What does stimulation of occipital lobe do?
visual hallucinations
What does stimulation of temporal lobe do?
Visual/auditory hallucinations, activate whole memories
What does stimulation of prefrontal lobe do?
Nothing
→ ‘silent cortex’
• People inferred this part wasn't important
Where was Phineas Gage's injury located?
total ablation of orbitofrontal cortex
What does a PET scanner scan?
PET scanner (1970’s) → look at brain chemistry and blood flow
o Neurochemicals

o Blood flow and neural activity
What does an MRI scanner scan?
MRI scanner (1970’s-80’s)
o Structure and [later] function and blood flow
What is Transcranial magnetic stimulation for?
"Virtual lesions" → disrupt brain areas as if they were damaged
