The technique of placing a client in position safely, comfortably and effectively in preparation for any procedure

Positioning

The manner of arranging the cover in order to expose the part being examined

Draping

It is placing the client on his/her back with the spine in straight alignment. The arms positioned at the client's side with the hands pronated

Supine

It is placing the client on his/her abdomen with the head turned to one side and the hips are not flexed

Prone

It is placing the client on his/her back with the head of the head raised to 45°angle

Fowler's

It is placing the client on his/her back with the head of the bed raised to 90° angle

High Fowler's

Placing the client on his/her back with the head of the bed raised to 30° angle

Semi-fowler's

It is Placing the client on his/her back with the legs separated, knees flexed and the soles of the feet flat on bed, the arms is either above the head or flexed on the chest

Dorsal recumbent

It is Placing the client on his/her back, with legs separated, thighs deeply flexed towards the abdomen, the lower legs are elevated and supported with stirrups

Dorsal lithotomy

It is Placing the client on either side with the body inclined forward, the left arm is extended behind the back and the right elbow is flexed forward, the right thigh is flexed towards the abdomen, the knee is drawn higher than the left knee

Sim's

It is placing the client on his/her abdomen, knees are kneeled and slightly separated, the chest is resting on the bed and the thighs are perpendicular to the legs, the head is placed on one side and the arms is either above the head or flexed at the elbow and alongside of the head

Knee-chest

It is placing the client on one side of the body, the top hip is flexed and placed in front of the body

Lateral left/right

It is placing the client on his/her back, the foot of the bed is elevated, that the lower trunk is higher than the head and shoulders

Trendelenburg

These devices provide support, elevate body parts, and can splint incisional areas, reducing postoperative pain during activity or coughing and deep breathing

Pillows

These devices maintain feet in dorsiflexion

Foot boots

These devices prevents external rotation of legs when clients are in supine position

Trochanter rolls

These devices provide support and shape to body contours; they immobilize extremities and maintain specific body alignment

Sandbags

These devices maintain the thumb slightly adducted and in position to the fingers; they maintain fingers in a slightly flexed position

Handrolls

These devices are individually moulded for the client to maintain proper alignment of the thumb in slight adduction and the wrist in slight dorsiflexion

Hand-wrist splints

These devices descends from a securely fastened overhead bar attached to the bed frame. It allows the client to use Upper extremities to raise the trunk off the bed, to assist in transfer from bed to wheel chair, or to perform upper arm strengthening exercises

Trapeze bar

These devices ensure client safety and are useful for increasing mobility. They are positioned along the sides of the length of the bed

Side rails

These are plywood boards placed under the entire surface area of the mattress. They are useful for increasing back support and alignment, especially with a soft mattress

Bed boards

These devices are triangular-shaped pillow made of heavy foam. It is used to maintain legs in abduction following total hip replacement surgery

Wedge pillow

These are techniques used to change the client's position, move clients up in bed or transfer from bed to chair or bed to stretcher, client's who are semi helpless, helpless or, immobilized

Transfer Techniques

Is a technique used to turn a client whose body must at all times be kept in straight alignment. This technique requires two nurses or, if the client is large, three nurses

Logrolling a client

The client assumes a sitting position on the edge of the bed before walking, moving to a chair or wheelchair, eating, or performing other activities

Dangling
