First Assumption |
Cognitive development is a result of an active and voluntary exploration by the child whereby the child adapts and understand their environment. This is technically know as adaption. |

The Second Assumption |
Adaptation is classified into three functional variants.
These variants are: assimilation, accommodation and equilibration. 1. Assimilation is know as the selective modification of newly experienced information with that which was previously known. 2. Accommodation is the altering of previously known information.
3. Equilibration is the force that drives development along.
So... the new information is therefore assimilated into an existing scheme (mental categories).
