Iodine test

Drip iodine solution onto the sample. If the solution turns grey to blue black, starch is present

Benedict's test

Add equal amount of Benedict's solution and unknown sample. Heat @90°C for 2-3 mins. Light green, yellow, orange or brick red precipitate means presence of reducing sugar, from low concentration to high

Biuret test

Add equal amount of food sample and sodium hydroxide into a test tube. Mix well. Add a drop of copper sulfate and mix. Repeat adding a drop and mixing, until no further change. If the end result is violet color, proteins present. If it is blue, no protein

Ethanol emulsion test

Add small amount of food sample and 2 ml of ethanol. Mix well. Allow mixture to settle. If cloudy white emulsion, fats or lipids present
