Surrealism

Began in Paris, in the 1920s. Sought to release the creative potential from the unconscious mind.

Pop Art

A 20th century modern art movement. Was at its peak in America and England in the 1960s and 70s. It borrows images from contemporary popular and commercial culture, and then recreates the images using fine art media.

Conceptual Art

A modern movement in the U.S., in the late 1960's and the 1970's that is still apparent in the art world today.

Photorealism

Was at it's height in the U.S. in the mid- 1960's, and 1970's. Involves exacting realism and precision in rendering with the additional aspect that the work includes the photogenic vision of reality.

Les Fauves

The first 20th century art movement; in Paris; between 1905-1908. Named by a critic who called the color 'violent'. Les fauves means wild beasts. Not restricted to natures colors, used arbitrary color.

Cubism

Subjects are flattened into planes and geometric facets, and them reassembled to create a striking abstract picture. The artists were representing multiple view points/

Dada

An anti-art, anti-meaning, anti-movement. It is a nihilistic (extreme form of skepticism) art movement. It was anarchistic.

A technique that Leonardo da Vinci invented. The soft, veiled, smoky appearance of oil painting.
