the literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.

What is Irony?

the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. EX: Exclaiming “oh great” after failing an exam

a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid.


EX: Her hair was as soft as a spider web.

the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation, etc.

What is Hyperbole?

exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.

Aside

when a character's dialogue is spoken but not heard by the other actors on the stage.

Soliloquy

passage in a drama in which a character expresses his thoughts or feelings aloud while either alone upon the stage or with the other actors keeping silent.
