Hyperpituitarism |
*Over secretion of hormones secreted by pituitary gland resulting in gigantism. *Gigantism - overgrowth of long bones (develops in children before epiphyseal closure); abrupt onset *Acromegaly - slow progression - occurs in adults, results in course facial features, jaw protrusion, thickened ears, nose, tongue, fingers. *Rx - surgical removal or radiation of tumor, drug therapy; if pituitary function is lost after surgery. Treatment with other hormone replacement may be necessary. *PT Implications - early post op amb, deep breathing EX, avoid cough/sneeze/blow nose; monitor for s/sx of ↑ICP and meningitis (both potential post-op complications) monitor for s/sx, hypoglycemia; may see frequent mood changes. |
