Cuticle

Is the tough, outer protective covering. The layer is generally made of 7 to 12 layers of transparent, overlapping scale-like (flat) cells. How tightly the cells overlap determines how quickly product will be absorbed into the hair

Cortex

Is the soft, elastic, thick, inner layer made up of elongated cells that bond together tightly. Thid fibrous layer contains the coloring matter (melanin) and the hair's protein (keratin). The cortex is responsible for an estimated 90% of the hair's weight

Medulla

Is the deepest layer, consisting of round cells. Sometimes it is intermittent or totally absent. The medulla is known to not have any true effect on the hair. Haircolor does not reach this layer
