Emergency procedures

What are the emergency procedures for BA crews committed to an incident?

1. Sound bodyguard distress signal unit

2. Go into entrapped procedure

3. To mutually exchange air with another Ba wearer

4. To call for assistance by radio.

What are the distress signals?

1. Become lost or confused

2. Are injured and in difficulty

3. Have problems with their Ba set.

4. Become distressed and/ or disoriented.

NOTE: Do not wait- inform entry control operative and then operate the Dsu to summon assistance.

On hearing an Adsu/Dsu team leaders direct their Ba teams to investigate source of sound. Distress takes precedence over work in hand but other factors should be considered. Such as:

1. Having sufficient reserves of air to enable effective assistance to be given.

2. Maintaining safe egress

3. Whether the Ba team is already carrying out a rescue

4. BA team hearing an Adsu/Dsu should advise the ECO/ communications operative and should keep them informed of their actions.

What are the factors to be considered by a Ba team before responding to Dsu actuation?

How close they are to the exit.

How close they are to the fire or other hazard.

Whether staying where they are put them in further/ greater difficulties/ increased risk

Can they see or hear other Ba teams who may be able to assist.

What is the entrapped procedure?

1. Inform the ECO/ comms operative

2. Operate one Dsu(ECO should also be alerted to this by the Ecb)

3. Relax as much as possible in the circumstances by assuming a reclined or seated posture, preferably against a wall for support and on the emergency teams likely route.

4. Maintain physical contact with the other team members

5. Keep speech and movement to a minimum

6. Do not use the additional flow button.

7. Do not adjust the cylinder valve

8. Keep all personal lamps switched on.

Emergency Exchange of Air

1. BA wearer requiring air, gains the attention of another team member and shows their bodyguard stating' I need air'.

2. The message is confirmed by the donor who checks that they have sufficient air to assist and replies- 'i can give you air'.

3. Donor removes protective blank cap from their second person connection.

4. The recipient then takes a deep breath and, whilst holding their breath, disconnects their Facemask from air supply hose, using the 'in line ' connection, and connects it to a second person connection of the donor. Normal breathing commences.

5. Recipient removes the second person connection hose from the clips of the donors Ba set.

6. The recipient then links arms with donor to prevent excessive strain being placed on supply hoses and connections.

7. Donor contacts ECO with following info:

A. Their location

B. Whether or not they are adopting entrapped procedure or

C. Whether or not they are coming out.

8. The recipient then activates their Dsu.

9. Sufficient air available, team leaves incident and reports to ECO. If air supply is insufficient, ba team adopt entrapped procedure.

10. If the recipient cannot carry out any of the above actions, the donor must carry out recipients tasks on their behalf.

-This procedure will only be adopted in an emergency. The recipients bodyguard Dsu is to be sounded immediately after transfer of air has been completed.

BA team members carrying out exchange of air must inform ECO/ comms op when procedure is being carried out and upon satisfactory completion.

Cable entanglement

At incidents where fallen electrical cables are encountered, isolate the electrical supply asap.

This procedure and the provision of electrically insulated cable cutters in BA set enables FF to free themselves or others who are entangled.

BA teams-Safe movement procedures at all times to identify fallen cables. To avoid entanglement.

BA teams encountering fallen cables must immediately inform

- BA team members

- other Ba teams

- ECO- located cables. Communicate to the Ic and sector commander of hazard.

Procedure if Ba team member becomes entangled and is unable to free themselves.

1. Inform all other Ba team members and remain as still as possible to prevent further entanglement

2. The entangled ba team member must clearly state ' I am entangled in cable's.

Any Ba team being informed that another Ba team member is entangled in cable's must;

1. Clearly state to the entangled Ba team member: 'stay still and cross your arms at chest height'

2. Approach entangled ba team member with caution using safe movement procedure.

3. Locate cables by completing a head to toe sweep using the back of hands where possible.

4. Where possible the rescuer should use their own cable cutters to cut cables if unable to remove cables by hand.

5. Repeat above process until all cables are removed.

6. Cable cutters are re-stowed. This can be carried out by other members of Ba team.

NOTE if Dsu has been operated. BA team must withdraw.

Procedure where a wearer cannot be freed by their Ba team member.

ECO informed

In these circumstances the entangled wearer should:

1. Inform ECO of entanglement and location of cables encountered.

2. Remain as still as possible to prevent further entanglement.

3. Actuate Dsu

4. Locate cables causing entanglement by sweeping down either side of body.

5. Use own cable cutters to cut cables if unable to remove cables by hand: cut cables as far away from body as possible.

ECO's being informed of Ba team cable entanglement must:

1. Commit Emergency team

2. Inform IC.
