Describe how ECG paper works

Marks the paper with the stylus and uses heat.

What is standardization of the ECG

Quality control measures an accurate and reliable recording. The mark is 2 large boxes and 10 small boxes.

Describe bipolar leads

Measures flow of electrical current in 2 directions at the same time 1,2,3 produce deflections.

Describe augmented leads

The tracing are most commonly arranged in a grind of 4 columns and 3 rows.

Describe chest leads

V1-V6 records hearts voltage from front to back. The electrical current traveling through the heart is recorded from inside the heart to a point on the chest wall where electrodes are placed

Name 3 ECG capabilities

3-channel recording, interpretative ECG, EMR connectivity, teletransmission

What are some reasons that an ECG might show artifacts

Electrical activity picked up by machine include: Electrical activity outside, loose electrodes, unattached leads, muscle movement.

What should you do if there is artifact?

Make sure all electrical devices are away from, machine, check leads, wires, wires follow body contour, cover patient with blanket and move machine away from wall.

What is muscle artifact

Caused by voluntary or involuntary movement

What is an alternating current artifact caused by

Outside electrical activity - check outlet, switch outlets, move away from wall, no dangaling cords, turn off lights

Describe a holter moiniter

Portable ambulatory moniter system for continuous recording of electrical activity. Has 5 leads. Used to diagnosis cardiac rhythm, rate and conduction abnormalities.

Premature atrial contraction

Beat that comes before next normal beat due. Found in healthy people associated with intake of stimulus

Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia

Abrupt episode of tachycardia with constant rate that is usually between 150-250bpm short burst last a few seconds found in young healthy people with no underlying heart disease

Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia

Abrupt episode of tachycardia with constant rate that is usually between 150-250bpm short burst last a few seconds found in young healthy people with no underlying heart disease

Atrail flutter

Rapid regular fluttering of atrium in which heart rate falls between 250-350bpm healthly people and is found in people with heart disease

Atrial fibrillation

P waves have no definite pattern or shape P waves appear wavy between QRS complex. Healthy people and people with heart disease

Premature ventricular contraction

Most common rhythm disturbance on ECG beat comes early in cycle is not proceeded by P wave and distorted QRS complex and T wave in opposite direction to R wave of QRS complex

What is angina period and what is caused by?

Set of symptoms rather than a disease pain in chest occurs when muscle tissue of heart does not revive enough oxygen resulting in discomfort or pain under sternum

Placement of aVR

Records electrical current traveling between right arm and central point

AVL

Records current traveling between left arm and central point of right arm

AVF

Left leg and central point between right and left arms

V1

4th intercostal space at right margin of sternum

V2

Same as v1 except left sternum

V3

Midway between posistions 2 and 4

V4

5th intercostal space at junction of left midclavicular

V5

At horizontal level of position 4 and at left anterior axillary line

V6

At horizontal level of position 4 at left midaxillary line

What can you try to do if a lead will not stay and keeps popping off?

Tape it down or get new electrode

How should you describe an EKG to a patient

Machine that records electrical activity of heart will not shock you only records electrical current of heart

Cardiac cycle

1 complete heart beat

How many leads on EKG

12

Glavanometer

Takes voltage revived from heart and turns it into mechanical motion

Normal sinus rhythm

All waves and intervals are in normal ranges

Bigeminy

Is Dysrhythmia which every other heart beat is ventricular contraction

Which leads are recorded simultaneously on 3 channel lead

V4, V5, V6

Bipolar leads

Reads limbs
