What is foodborne transmission?

Food contaminated with a pathogen.

# 1 way to break the chain of infection?

Handwashing

Pacemaker of the heart?

SA node.

electrical conduction system of the heart.

SA node- AV node- bundle of his- left and right bundle branches- purkinje fibers.

Artifacts

Study alternating current, somatic, and wandering baseline.

Know cardiac cycle

P wave atrial depolarization, QRS ventricle depolarization, T wave ventricle repolarization, U wave not usually seen but associated with ventricle repolarization.

Standardization mark dimensions

2mm wide 10mm high. Normal standardization let's MA know machine is properly calibrated.

Normal running speed of an ekg

25/mm sec or 25mm/mv. ( MV equals millivolts)

Gain vs amplitude

When you increase the amplitude you also increase the gain on the machine.

Holter monitor

Portable ambulatory electrocardiograph

Holter monitor records

Continuous recording of cardiac activity for at least 24 hours.

Patient activity diary

Record all activities- physical, emotional, sexual, sleep and times.

Contraindication. (Contra=against)

used to say that something (such as a treatment, procedure, or activity) should not be done or used in a particular situation for medical reasons.

Stress test instructions

No tobacco, no caffeine, no alcohol 3 hours prior to test.

Medicine stress test instructions

It's should take their normal medications unless otherwise instructed.

Beta blockers

Should be avoided specifically for the heart prior to a stress test.

When PT experiences extreme fatigue.

The stress test should be stopped.

Dextrocardia

Condition where the heart is pointed towards the right side of the chest. Electrodes go on right side of chest and arm leads are flipped (RA goes on LA)

Telemetry

Way of monitoring the heart while hospitalized (looks for pattern of your heartbeats to spot heart probs and monitor effectiveness of medications)

Telemetry unit.

5 colored wires attached to it with 5 sticky pads that are attached to PT's chest.

Limb leads.

LL= Left leg, RL= Right leg the ground ( when referring to the ground it is the right leg), LA= Left arm, RA= right arm.

If PT has no legs

Place electrodes on lower portion of abdomen, above the pelvic cavity.

HEP A

Transmitted via fecal oral route (affects the liver)

HEB B & C

Transmitted via a needle stick (affects the liver)

Sepsis

Something contaminated with a pathogenic microorganism.

Asepsis

Abscence of pathogenic microorganisms

What goes in biohazardous bag

Anything contaminated with bodily fluids except sharp objects.

What goes in a sharps container?

All sharp objects contaminated with bodily fluids.

Which pulse is checked during emergency situations and during CPR?

Carotid pulse.

What is an interval?

Waveform plus a segment

QT interval goes from?

Beginning of QRS complex to the end of the T wave.

PR Interval goes from

The beginning of the P wave to the beginning of the QRS complex.

Counting Horizontal boxes calculates

PT heartrate

Dimensions of the squares

Small 1mm by 1mm, large 5mm by 5mm

A 3 lead ekg monitors

Bipolar leads 1, 2 and 3

3 categories of leads.

Bipolar, chest , augmented

Lead angles

Lead 2 records from the right arm to the left leg. ( lead 2 shows the heart rhythm clearer then all the other leads)

Lead AVR angle

Records from the right arm and a central location between the left arm and the left leg.

Bipolar and augmented leads

Record side to side and top to bottom of the heart.

Leads V1-V6 ( chest leads)

Record from front to the back of the heart.

Dysrhythmia & arrhythmia

Are synonyms for an irregular heartbeat. BOTH MEAN ABNORMAL RHYTHM.

Normal QRS complex measures

0.06-0.10 seconds

A normal PR interval measures

0.12-0.20 secs
