Drives serum potassium back into the cell
Enhances urinary excretion of tricyclics

neutralizes acidosis by reacting with hydrogen ions to form water and carbon dioxide

Indications
Hyperkalemic cardiac arrests associated with renal failure or dialysis.

Suspected acidosis during cardiac arrests from renal failure/dialysis, methanol ingestion, ASA overdose.

Prolonged cardiac arrest.
Side QRS or AV block associated with tricyclic anti-depressant overdose.

Precautions
Ensure and maintain adequate ventilation to eliminate carbon didoxide.
Deactivates many drugs; flush IV line well between all drugs
Assure IV patency; refer to Drug Administration Principles.
