Pediatric: may rarely be ordered by biotel.

Drug Action
Converts stored glycogen to glucose, increasing blood glucose levels.
Improves cardiac contractility and increases heart rate.

Indications
Hypoglycemia that cannot be treated with D50 (unable to establish IV) or Glutose (patient has no gag reflex)
-Beta-blocker and calcium channel blocker toxicity.

Precautions
Because of its inotropic properties, it can cause problems for patients with cardiovascular, kidney and liver disease. Do not administer as a first line drug unless:
-IV cannot be established for the administration of D50.
-The patient cannot safely swallow glutose.
