Identify Hazards associated with driving a rigid vehicle & how to reduce the risks associated with each hazard (3 Hazards required)

Give 3 Hazards and how to minimise the risks

Hazard One and how to minimise

Hazard: Driving with heavy traffic in multiple lanes

Minimise by: Avoid right lane, unnecessary lane changes, 3 seconds indicating, staying entirely within your lane.

Hazard two and how to minimise

Hazard: Driving around sharp bends

Minimise by: watch for warning signs and observe road markers, brake to slow down and change gears down before the corner, Take corners wide rather than sharp, Accelerate from the apex of the bend.

Hazard three and how to minimise

Hazard: Overtaking on an open road

Minimise by: Making sure visibility throughout the entire overtaking movement, don’t take risks, allow for slow acceleration and extra length of the vehicle, indicate for minimum of 3 seconds.

What are the 3 actions applicable at all times

- Drive to conditions

- Following distance (4 seconds)

- Search ahead (12 seconds) behind in mirrors, blind spots

List 5 actions to minimise risks of a truck tipping or rolling over

1. Avoid steep chambers on the road, especially sharp bends.

2. Avoid lifting and _______ __ _______ on __ _________. _______ ______ ____ ___________ __ __ _______ __ __ ______ ____ ____ __ _____ __ __ _____ __ _____ ______ __ ______.

3. Look 12 seconds ahead and keep a safe following distance to avoid ________ ________ __ _________ ________ _________ _____ _______ ________.

4. When going around bends always use: ________ _______ _________.

.

1. Avoid steep chambers on the road, especially sharp bends.

2. Avoid lifting and ‘dropping a wheel’ on ‘a gutter’. ‘Sudden lifting and dropping of a section of a vehicle can top it over if it has a high centre of gravity’.

3. Look 12 seconds ahead and keep a safe following distance to avoid ‘sudden change in directions especially combined with severe braking

4. When going around bends always use ‘correct cornering technique’.

List 5 reasons why we must restrain the load on a truck?

1. To prevent the load from being lost off the vehicle and damaging the environment.

2. To prevent the load moving.

3. prevent damage to the load.

4. Prevent damage to the vehicle.

5. Vehicle instability.

Load restraint systems must be able to prevent the load moving up & down, forwards & backwards & sideways.

Up & down - At least ‘one fifth’ the weight of the load.

Forwards - At least ‘total’ the weight of the load

Backwards - At least ‘half’ the weight of the load

Sideways - At least ‘half’ the weight of the load

In relation to the load left on the vehicle, what should the driver do before moving off?

He will arrange the load so it isn’t….. ‘all on one side’

And it isn’t….. ‘on the rear axle’

In relation to the load left on the vehicle, what should the driver do before moving off?

He will arrange the load so it isn’t….. ‘all on one side’

And it isn’t….. ‘on the rear axle’

Now explain how and where he will rearrange the load:

By redistributing the load down the centre line of the truck and placing evenly over the front and rear axis.

Give two reasons for why the driver should do this:

1. Will give it better traction

2. Provides better handling and control

Describe 4 load distribution techniques that will maximise vehicle control and safe driving practices?

1. The vehicle must be loaded to provide the correct axle weight distribution.

2. The load may have to be redistributed each time part of the load is taken off or picked up.

3. Always stay with the maximum legal axle weight limit.

4. For stacked loads, heavier and larger items should be put on the bottom and lighter items on top.

Common Loading offences

A. Having an unrestrained load.

B. Having an uncovered load, any part of which could fall from the vehicle.

C. Exceeding load dimensions.

D. Exceeding weight specified on the certificate of loading.

E. Exceeding weight specified on the road user charges license.
