What is the purpose of the Urease Test?
|
To differeniate organisms based on their ability to hydrolyze urea with the enzyme urease (gram neg bacteria).

How is Urea produced?
|
It's a product of decarboxylation of certain amino acids. It can be hydrolyzed to ammonia and carbon dioxide by bacteria containing the enzyme urease.

Why was the Urea agar formulated?
|
To differeniate rapid urease + organisms from the slower urease + and urease - bacteria.

What are the 2 differences between urea agar and urea broth?
|
Urea broth only has one nutrient source, trace of yeast extract. It also contains buffers strong enough to inhibit alkalinzation of the medium but the rapid urease + organisms.
