Line
Path of a moving point. May be explicit or implied, thick, think, dotted, ect.
Shape
An identifiable area distinguished from surrounding or adjacent areas. May have straight lines (geometric) or free-formed (organic), combinations of contours (borders), colors, ect.
Texture
The surface quality of an area, object. Rough smooth pebbled, ect.
Value
Degree of lightness or darkness (light blue, dark blue) also applies to black and white. Most white photographs will have a wide range of values.
Composition
The way a picture is arranged, structured or composed.
Monochromatic
One color. A monochromatic painting may have many values. It may be many values of red for example. Black and white is part of a monochromatic color scheme. A picture with many values of one color may have black and may have white and still be monochromatic. A black and white photo is monochromatic by definition.
Painterly
Drippy. Paint applied loosely and seemingly spontaneously.
Gestural
Painting with the arm and body as opposed to fingers and wrist .
Accent
A color of shape which is different or non-conforming. A triangle in a painting is consisting of only squares. An orange flower in a field of green grass.
Content
The underlying idea or conceptual basis of a work of art.
Expressionistic
Art based primarily on feelings and emotions.
Figurative
Usually involving a human (or animal) form as the major characteristic of the work.
Hue
The name of a color (red, blue, green, ect.)
Intensity
The brightness or dullness of a color (as opposed to lightness and darkness)
Non-Objective
Art based on abstract principles as opposed to “objects” around us.
Representational
Having the quality of resemblance which we recognize.
Non-Representational
Similar to non-objective. Art which chooses not to “represent” things around us.
Avant-Garde
Artists in the forefront of new activity.
Aesthetic
Pertaining to what is considered “beautiful”.
Balance
A sensed quality of structural stability in a work of art based on the overall composition.
Rhythm
Repetition of forms, colors, ect. Waves create a strong sense of visual rhythm as they flow to the shore.
Proportion
The relationship in scale between one element or another, or between a whole or one of its parts.
Negative Shape, Negative Space
The non-drawn or non-painted parts of a work of art. A void inside a sculpture. In terms of perception, negative shapes and positive shapes are of equal importance.
Complimentary
Colors opposite one another on the color wheel. May reinforce or neutralize.
Simultaneous Contrast
Identical colors may appear to be different depending on adjacent or surrounding hues.
Tint
Color mixed with white.
Tone
Color mixed with black.
Shade
Color mixed with black and white.
Primary Color
Yellow, red, and blue. The colors from which all colors are mixed.
Format
The size of a design.
Achromatic
Without color.
Content
The idea inherit in a design or work of art.
Amorphous
Without form
Pigment
The material which contains the color of the paint, ink cartridge, ect.
Medium
The materials employed in a work (i.e. oils, watercolor, laser print, ect.)
