Ceramic artwork has been an art form for the longest time with the earliest humans making pots, vases, stoneware, and figurines. In the 16th century an artist in Japan created a ceramic tea bowl that would have been prized for its beauty in that day and time. The 16th century tea bowl would have been highly thought after for its irregularities in color and shape and was created to be appreciated by its user.

Calligraphy- Calligraphy in China is considered to be one of the highest forms of art. Calligraphy is the art of elegant painted lettering and the Chinese considered this art to be of major importance and the work of the highly skilled. Unlike China, Peru would have considered wool as a fine art and skillful. This shows the contrast between countries and what they consider to be meaningful art.

When first examining the two pieces you may think that they have nothing in common with one another. With further study you realize while they were made in different time periods and for different reasons they have similarities. The first piece of art is “The Journey of the Sun God Re” which dates back to 990-969 BCE and was found on Nespawershefi’s coffin. Art in that time period had religious meanings as does this artwork. This painting depicts the Sun God traveling by boat above a river with a snake slithering through the water. Rivers were important in many ways back in the time period this was painted. They were important in survival and the Egyptians depended on them to grow their crops. Along with survival, rivers held religious importance. The Egyptians believed in the underworld and rising from it to live a happy life after death which is the journey this painting is showing us. The Sun God Re must defeat the serpent named Apophis and if not the world would be deprived of the life giving sun. In this painting the river is not shown as what a river would realistically look like, rather it is suggested. This suggested river is not beautiful or admirable, instead it is shown as a place of danger and is
