Definition

Dehydration is a physiological disturbance caused by the reduction or translocation of bloody fluids

Etiology- decreased fluid intake (rear)

Pharyngitis

Respiratory distress

Anorexia

Physical restrictions: depressed CNS, child abuse

Increased fluid output (insensible losses)

Fever- every 1 degree increase in temp= 12% of fluid loss

Sweating

Heat stroke

Hyperventilation

Increase fluid output (renal losses)

Osmotic: hyperglycaemia, DKA, incorrectly mixed formula

Non-osmotic: sustained hypokalemia, hypercalcemia, chronic renal failure, diabetes insipidus

Increased fluid output (GI losses)

Vomiting

Diarrhoea

Increased fluid output (translocation of fluids)

Burns

Ascities

Dehydration management

Oral rehydration therapy when possible

Assess BGL, manage hypoglycaemia 2ml/kg 10% glucose

IV fluid replacement 10-20ml/kg

Deficit- % loss of body weight x body weight
