What is the definition of dehydration?

When you use or lose more fluid than you take in and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal function.

What are some possible reasons for reduced fluid intake?

*Pharyngitis


*Anorexia


*Respiratory distress


*Abuse, usually elderly or children


*Voluntary or imposed cessation

Increased fluid output can be categorised into 4 areas. What are they?

*Insensible losses (hard to measure)


*Renal losses


*GI losses


*Translocation

What are some insensible losses of fluid?

*Respiration


*Fever


*Sweating


*Heat Stroke (read up on this!)


*Hyperventilation

What are some real losses of fluid?

*Osmotic


-Hyperglycaemia


-Diuretic overdose


*Non osmotic


-Sustained hypokalaemia or hypercalcaemia


-Chronic renal failure
