Displacement |
Place unwanted/unpleasant feelings onto someone LESS THREATENING or an INNOCENT BYSTANDER. Ex: being angry at your boss, you redirect feelings to a safer source, such as a spouse or friend. |

Splitting |
Clients with borderline personality disorder identify a person as either all good or all bad. Ex: A therapist is considered "great" until she does something the client dislikes. Then she becomes "a horrible therapist." |

Rationalization |
Making excuses or justifying actions to avoid unwanted feelings. Ex: you weren't hired for a job you wanted. You rationalize by stating, "it's too far a commute anyway." |

Denial |
Refusing to acknowledge the truth or facts. "I'm not a shopaholic," when all of your credit cards are maxed. |

Repression/suppression |
Putting painful thought and memories away and forgetting them. |

Sublimation |
A healthy redirection of an emotion. Ex: you release your answer at a kickboxing class (rather than addressing the cause of the anger). |
