Displacement

Place unwanted/unpleasant feelings onto someone LESS THREATENING or an INNOCENT BYSTANDER. Ex: being angry at your boss, you redirect feelings to a safer source, such as a spouse or friend.

Projection

Taking your emotions and placing it onto others who do not have these emotions.

Introjection

Taking on someone else's feelings as your own

Projective Identification

Seen in borderline personality disorder--someone ego identified others as having their feelings, however they do not show those feelings. Ex: Sally, a client with borderline personality disorder, is feeling angry; yet, Sally doesn't show anger. Instead she states that get therapist is in an "angry mood."

Splitting

Clients with borderline personality disorder identify a person as either all good or all bad. Ex: A therapist is considered "great" until she does something the client dislikes. Then she becomes "a horrible therapist."

Rationalization

Making excuses or justifying actions to avoid unwanted feelings. Ex: you weren't hired for a job you wanted. You rationalize by stating, "it's too far a commute anyway."

Denial

Refusing to acknowledge the truth or facts. "I'm not a shopaholic," when all of your credit cards are maxed.

Repression/suppression

Putting painful thought and memories away and forgetting them.

Sublimation

A healthy redirection of an emotion. Ex: you release your answer at a kickboxing class (rather than addressing the cause of the anger).

The underlying problem is swept under the rug

Reaction-Formation

Turn painful feelings into the opposite. Ex: person has a sudden loss but shows a happy mood.

Undoing

Taking back unwanted behaviors with praises or gifts. Ex: making up for scolding a child by giving gifts

Isolation of Affect

Expressing no emotions when confronted with difficult events. I.e. no emotions during a crisis.
