Blocking a wish or desire from unconscious part of the mind
Repression example
you forget the name of someone for whom you have intense negative feelings
Denial
a more serious form of Repression. Person lives as though an unwanted piece of informatio or reality does not exist. Theres a persistant refusal to be swayed by evidence.
Denial

- after a diagnosis of terminal condition, the patient does not exhibit any expected emotional reaction & states that diagnosis is not true.

modeling behavior after someone else
accepting the other person's circumstances as though they were one's pwm

a man's wife died a very painful death from cancer when he is diagnosed with cancer. When he is diagnosed with cancer, he experiences extreme anxiety because he has accepted his wife's experience as if he had lived them
