Glucose concentration of the blood

What are pancreas?

An organ (and gland) in the mammalian digestive system which produces digestive juices. It also produces insulin and glucagon to control blood sugar level.

What is insulin?

A hormone produced and secreted by the pancreas when blood glucose level is too high. It causes the body's cells to take up more glucose from the blood, reducing the blood glucose level

Role of insulin in the control of blood glucose

1) After a meal containing carbohydrate, a person's blood glucose level rises. The rise is detected by the pancreas

2) The pancreas respond by producing insulin, which is secreted into the blood

3) Insulin causes body cells to take up more glucose from the blood. Cells in the liver and muscles take up glucose and convert it into a storage molecule called glycogen

4) This causes the blood glucose level to fall

Role of Glucagon in the control of blood glucose

1) If a person's blood glucose level decreases, the fall is detected by the pancreas.

2) The pancreas respond by producing glucagon, which is secreted into the blood

3) Glucose can be stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen. Glucagon causes the glycogen to be converted back into glucose, which enters the blood

4) This causes the blood glucose level to rise

Define Glycogen

A molecule that acts as a store of glucose in liver and muscle cells

What is Type 1 diabetes?

A condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin, which means blood glucose can rise to a dangerous level

Define Glucagon

A hormone produced and secreted by the pancreas when blood glucose level is too low. It causes glycogen to be converted back into glucose, increasing the blood glucose level.

Controlling Type 1 diabetes

Controlling Type 2 diabetes

What is Type 2 diabetes?

A condition in which the body is unable to control blood sugar level

Modern treatment options for Type 1 diabetes

Testing for diabetes

> Looking for glucose in a urine sample but these samples can be hours old

>Blood test for glucose can then confirm diagnosis-more reliable as it gives the current level of glucose in the blood, and can detect a high level of glucose when the level is not yet high enough for glucose in the urine
