While palpating, what are you looking for?
Pt face for grimacing, which usually indicates tenderness and an underlying injury. Chapter 29 pp 722
What is a hematoma?
Areas of localized swelling caused by the accumulation of blood and other fluids beneath the skin. Chapter 29 pp 721
What is a contusions?
Injuries resulting with the tissues below the epidermis are damaged & cause bleeding into the surrounding tissues flooowing a blunt trauma or crushing force. Also called bruises.Chapter 29 pp 721
Where do you begin to palpate when there is a specific chief complaint in a certain area?
If you know that pain is present ina a certain area,plapate that area last so that the pt does not expierence residual discomfort when you examine uninjuried areas.Chapter 29 pp 723
What is an avulsions?
The skin and/or underlying tissue is forcibly torn away by the MOI. It may cause a flap of loose skin or it can also completely remove skin. Chapter 29 pp 725
What are the steps for a pt with an open soft-tissue injury?
1)BSI & scene size up 2)initial assessment 3)control bleeding 4)High-flow O2 5)Rapid or focused trauma assessment 6)Immobilize injuried extremity 7)Transport 8)Ongoing assessments 9)watch for shock signs & smyptoms. Chapter 29 pp 730
What is done with an impaled object?
Stabilize the object with material such as large bulky dressings, roller gauze, or trianglular bandage. Chapter 29 pp 733
Is it permissible to remove an impaled object in the field?
If the object is impaled in the cheek,especially if leaving it in could compromise pt airway. Also objects impaled in tracheau or causing obstruction of airway. Have suchion ready. Chapter 29 pp 734
What are steps for amputated part?
1)Wrap with sterile dressing or cover large areas. Moisten dressings with sterile saline. 2)wrapped part in plastic bag or cover to conserve moisture. Label bag with pt name 3)Keep part cool by using cool packs and placing them side by side with bagged part. Do not freeze. 4)Try to keep part with pt but don't delay to find part.
*Do not complete the amputation by cutting away tissue. Chapter 29 pp 736
