What is communication apprehension?
Extent to which people exhibit anxiety about speaking to others.
Intrapersonal Communication
Communication with ourselves.
Interpersonal Communication
Message transaction between people.
Small Group Communication
Communication between and among members of a team who meet for a common purpose.
Organizational Communication
Communication with large, extended groups.
Mass Communication
Communication to a large audience via television, radio, newspaper or internet.
Public Communication
Communication in which one person gives a speech to a large audience in person.
Physical Noise
"External" noise. EX: bright clothing, lawn mower, loud music
Physiological Noise
Biological influences. Hearing, visual impairments, physical well being
Psychological Noise
"Internal" noise. Biases, prejudices, feelings toward a person or a message
Semantic Noise
Senders and receivers apply different meanings to the same message. EX: someone who speaks another language, their English isn't correct
What does linear view suggest?
Communication takes place in a context, or the environment in which a message is sent.
Physical Context
Tangible environment in which communication occurs. EX: dinner table, apartment, temperature, lighting, size of the room
Cultural Context
Refers to the rules, roles, norms, and patterns of communication
Social-emotional Context
Associated with the nature of the relationship that affects a communication encounter. EX: Are the communicators in a particular interaction friendly or unfriendly, supportive or unsupportive?
Historical Context
Messages are understood in relationship to previously sent messages.
