Free soil Party
A group that believed that since the U.S was free soil than everyone was a free man. Widely absorbed by Republicans.
Harriet Tubman
Was an escaped slave that led over thirteen missions in the underground railroad to help 70 slaves reach free land.

A law that required the return of escaped slaves in other states to return to their masters.
ostend Manifesto
Was a doctrine that argued that the U.S should buy Cuba from Spain; if Spain refused than war should be declared.
Kansas Nebraska Act
Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and allowed the settlers in those territories to vote to legalize slavery.
Wilmot Proviso
Proposed by David Wilmot to ban slavery in all territories acquired from Mexico. It passed in the House of Rep but failed to be approved by senate. It was tried to be made part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo but failed.
William Lloyd Garrison
Was a slavery abolitionist who was the editor of the abolitionist newspaper the Liberator. Ha also was one of the founders of the American Anti Slavery Society and voice for Womens suffrage.
Frederick Douglas
As a former slave he was a leader in the abolitionist movement writing many books on slavery. After the civil war he worked for womens rights. He believed freedom was for everyone.
Underground Railroad
Was a vast network of people and homes that helped runaway slaves escape to the North and Canada.
Compromise of 1850
Was an act trying to solve the question of slavery.
