What do chromosomes do |
Contain genetic information |
What are chromosomes |
Coiled up lengths of dna molecules carrying genes |
What do genes control |
The development of different characteristics e.g hair colour |
How many copies of chromosomes do body cells have |
Two copies |
What does the cell cycle do |
Makes new cells for growth, development and repair |
What is the stage where the cell divides called |
Mitosis |
Why is mitosis used |
To grow or replace cells that have been damaged |
What are the two stages of the cell cycle |
Growth and DNA replication and mitosis |
What happens in growth and DNA replication |
In the cell that’s not dividing DNA is spread out in long strings The cells grow and increase the sub cellular structures Then it duplicates the DNA having a copy each, the DNA is copied and forms X shaped chromosomes |
What happens during mitosis |
Once the DNA is copied: The chromosomes line up in the centre of the cell, cell fibres pull them apart, two arms go to opposite ends of the cell Membranes form around each of the sets, becoming the nuclei of the two new cells-the nucleus has divided The cytoplasm and cell membranes divide The cell has then produced two new identical cells containing the same DNA, becoming identical, and the parent cell is also identical |
