What is chemical bonding?

The force of attraction which keeps particles together in a substance

What are the 3 types of bonds?

1. Ionic bond

2. Covalent bond

3. Metallic bond

Why are noble gases unreactive?

They have a completely filled outer shell

What does an element do to gain the noble gas stability?

It needs to lose or gain electrons to completely fil its valence shell

It uses the easiest way possible to gain it

What are ions?

Ions are charged particles

What are cations?

-Positively charged ions

-Most likely to be metals as metals usually have less electrons in their valence shell than non-metals

-Forms when an atom loses electrons

What are anions?

-Negatively charged ions

-Most likely to be non-metals as they have a nearly filled outer shell

-Formed when an atom gains electrons

What is an ionic bond?

-An ionic bond is the electrostatic force of attraction which exists between positive and negative ions

-Usually formed between a metal and a non-metal

What happens during the formation of an ionic bond?

The metal loses electrons while the non-metal gains them.
