Delta H rxn

Tells you exactly how much heat is required or released during a known chemical reaction.

Endothermic

If it's positive: heat is required.

Feels cold

Exothermic

If it's negative: heat is released

Feels hot

Thermochemical equation

The chem equation with the heat term (delta H rxn) written in the product of reactants

- delta Hrxn is in products/ pos. Delta Hrxn reactants

When calc. Delta H

1)look up heat on table of enthalpies

2) each one and multiple against the compounds coefficient, if given

3)products - reactants

What is heat?

A measure of energy required or lost when an object changes temp.

Measured in calories

Slants

Kinetic energy.

Same phase just change in temp.

Plateau

Potential. Changing the phase of a substance

Ex) ice into water

Heat equation

q=m(c)(Tf-Ti)

Slant/kinetic

Heat in phase change equation

q= m(H)

The H is either heat of vap./ fusion

Delta -T

(Final temp. - initial temp.)

The equation for heat transfer

-m(c)(Tfinal-Tinitial)=m(c)(Tfinal-Tinitial)

When one thing is hot and other cold and one is transferred into one

Heat transfer chem terms

-qhot=qcold

One thing can gain only as much as the other lost

Adding chemical equations

1)The equations you add must cancel out to create the given original

2)when adding together must also add delta Hrxn

3)Coefficients in each equation should be the same as the original one

4)if not multiply whole compound, including delta H

5)the matching compounds from new to original should be on same side (react/prod), if not flip equation and delta H sign

6)compounds not seen in original should cancel out

Heat stoich

1) balance equation

2) keep sign from heat term (delta Hrxn)

3) use heat term (kJ) in mole ratio

4) continue to make units cancel
