• 1898 TR called on Dewey 2b in charge invading Spain-controlled PHL • Battle of Manila Bay 1898 (S-A War) – Spanish wiped out b/c not war-worthy ships – COMPLETE U.S. VICTORY – successful in seas • Aug 13, 1898 Dewey captures Manila • Brought Emilio Aguinaldo out of exile to lead Philippines resistance * His capture of Manila paved the way for US imperialism in PHL and helped the US towards winning the S-A War. It also shed light on the real purpose of war w/ Spain, from just freeing Cuba to stripping Spain of all of its colonies. By utilizing American dominance against less developed countries, we were able to expand our empire.

• 1898 US Maine warship sent on friendly terms to Cuba to pick up Americans in danger there if Spain attacked • blew up in Havana harbor for no reason • 260 dead • Spain: accidental explosion while US: due to Spanish sub-mine *Together w/ Yellow Journalism, this event pushed the public to being pro-war. Shows how easy it is for the media to manipulate the public. |

TELLER AMENDMENT |
• 1898 • Henry M. Teller (Republican senator, CO) • promised the US wouldn't annex Cuba after winning the S-A war and the Cubans their freedom • It prevented Cuba from turning hostile towards the U.S. • followed the sinking of the US. Maine (pre-Spanish American War) • response to McKinley’s address regarding ending Spain’s hostility towards Cuba * Essential for Cuba’s independence and provided the US w/ justification for its actions while convincing Americans that the war wasn't simply an imperialist land grab. |

Expansionism, esp. in Philippines • Notable scholars: Twain, also Labor Union Gompers + Andrew Carnegie • believed treatment of PHL violated DOI, not by republican idea of “consent of the governed” • expansionism=losing US ideals of non-intervention & self-gov't • didn't want "inferior Asian races" blended into American society * League against America's main key to dominance, imperialists felt people had freedom, although this league showed they did not.
