Natural Selection
Differential succes in the reproduction of the different phenotypes resulting from the interactions of organisms with there environment. Evolution occurs when natural selection causes changes in relative frequency of allels in the gene pool
Evolutionary adaption
An accumulation of inherited characteristics that enhance organisms' ability to survive and reproduce in specific environments
Evolution
All the changes that have transformed earth from its earliest beginnings to the diversity that characterizes it today.
Fossils
A preserved remnant of imprint of an organism that lived in the past.
Taxonomy
The division of an organism into catagories based on a set of characteristics used to asses similarities and differences, leading to a classification scheme; the branch of biology concerned with naming and classifying the diverse forms of life.
Sedimentry Rock
Rocks formed from sand and mud that once settled in layers on the bottom of seas, lakes and marshes. Sedimentary rocks are often rich in fossils.
Paleontology
The scientific study of fossils
Catastrophism
The hypothesis by george Cuvier that each boundary between srtata corresponded in time to a catastrophe, such as a flood or a drought, that had destroyed many of the species living there at the time.
gradualism
A VIEW OF EARTHS HISTORY THAT ATTRIBUTES profound change to the cumulative product of slow but continuous process.
Uniformitarianism
Charles Lyell's idea that geologic processes have not changed through out earths history
Descent with modification
Darwin's initial phrase for the general process of evolution.
Artificial Selection
The selective breeding of domesticated plants and animals to encourage the occurance of desirable traits.
Homology
similarity in characteristics resulting tfrom shared ancestory
Homolougous Structures
Structures in different species that are similar because of ommon ancestory
vestigal Organs
A structure of marginal, if any, importance to the organism. Vestigal organs are historical remnants of structures that had important functions in ancestors
Biogeography
The study of past and present distribution of species
Endemic
refering to a species that is confined to a specific, realitively small area.
