Two components Species Diversity
SPECIES RICHNESS- number of species in a community.
RELATIVE ABUNDANCE- proportional representation of a species in a community.
Keystone Species
Occupies a niche that holds the community together. Ex: loss of sea lions led to more sea urchins, led to them eating away kelp forests.
Natural disturbance
Fires, storms, floods, droughts
Human Disturbance
Most significant agents of disturbance. Hunting in primitive areas, pick up a virus. Ebola.
Primary Succession
Disturbances that leaves only bare ground Ex: Lava fields, Glaciers
Secondary Sucession
Destroys existing community but leaves the soil intact.
Ex: Floods, Fire
Biodiversity
The variety of living things; includes genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity.
Threats to Biodiversity
1. Habitat Destruction 2. Habitat degradation (pesticides,pollution)

3. Overexploitation of species (over hunting bison)
4. Invasion of Exotic Species (zebra mussels)
Competitive Exclusion principle
Populations of two species cannot coexist if their niches are nearly identical. One population will eventually outcompete and eliminate the other.
Organism's Niche
the way the organism uses the range of physical and biological conditions in which it lives. Ex: Role of vultures is to feed on dead bodies, as scavengers.
