What are cells?
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things?
How are structures of living things determined?
By the variety of ways in which cells are put together.
What does the Cell Theory state?
-All living things are composed of cells
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things
-All cells are produced from other cells
What is a cell wall?
A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and other organisms. It helps protect and support the cell.
What is a cell membrane?
The next barrier after the cell wall that controls what substances come into and out of a cell.
What is a nucleus?
The "brain" of the cell or the cell's control center, directing all of the cell's activities.
What is a nuclear envelope?
A membrane that surrounds the nucleus and protects nucleus from materials like an envelope.
What is a chromatin?
Strands that contain genetic material or the instructions in directing the cell's functions.
What are cytoplasms?
The region between the cell membrane and the nucleus.
What are mitochondria?
Rod-shaped structures organelles. Known as the "powerhouses" of the cell because they convert energy in the food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions.
What endoplasmic reticulum?
Passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
What are ribosomes?
Small, grainlike bodies that function as factories to produce proteins.
What are golgi bodies?
The cell's "main room," that recieve proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, package them, and distribute them to other parts of the cell.
What are chloroplasts?
Green organelles that capture energy from sunlight and use it produce food for the cell.
What are vacuoles?
Large water-filled sac that are storage area for the cells.
What are lysosomes?
Small, round structures containing chemicals that break down certain materials in the cell.
What are organelles?
Carry out specific functions within the cell.
What are organized into many-celled organisms?
Tissues, organs, and organ systems.
What are tissues?
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.
What is an organ?
Made of different kinds of tissues that function together.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together to perform a major function.
What are bacterial cells?
Cell's genetic material which looks like a thick tangle string, found in the cytoplasm. Contain organnels and do not have a cell wall, cell membrane and nucleus.
