What is a right?

Something you are morally and legally entitled to

What are responsibilities?

Something you are accountable for

Eg- having a license, paying bills, paying taxes

Are rights and freedoms absolute?

No, They have reasonable limits and they need to be balanced with the needs of society.

What are the procedures if you think you have been treated unfairly?

-You can take your complaint to court or the human rights commission

-can appeal to the provincial court


-If you don’t like that decision you can appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada what the supreme court says goes.

What is a freedom?

Freedoms are rights that do not impose any kind of duty on the government.

List the three chartered freedoms and give an example for each.

Freedom of religion- freedom to practice any kind of faithFreedom of thought and expression- freedom to express your thoughts and beliefs. School powers and freedom of expression- Allows students to express their thoughts and their beliefs(eg- in a newspaper)

-Equality Rights- Being treated equally with no form of discrimination

-Disability Rights- Ensures that people with physical and mental disabilities have access to services.


-Minority Language Education Rights- Ensures that French and English through every territory. (Provides everything in French and English in Canada)


-Aboriginal Rights- Recognizing the treaty and land rights of the first nations.
