Afferent Nerves

Nerves that carry messages to the brain or spinal cord.

Autonomic Nervous System

A part of the peripheral nervous system that connects to glands and smooth muscles. Consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.

Brain Stem

"Trunk" of the brain. Contains the medulla, pons, midbrain, and diencephalon.

Broca's Arena

An area of the frontal lobe in the left hemisphere. Associated with language.

Central Sulcus

The major fissure that divides the frontal and parietal-occipital lobes.

Cerebellum

The distinctive structure at the back of the brain.

Cerebral Cortex

The outermost grey matter of the cerebrum, the distinctive convolutions characteristic of the mammalian brain.

Cerebral Hemispheres

The cerebral cortex, underlying white matter, and subcortical structures.

Efferent nerves

Nerves that carry messages from the brain to glands and organs in the periphery.

Forebrain

A part of the nervous system that contains the cerebral hemispheres, thalamus, and hypothalamus.

Frontal lobe

The front most part of the cerebrum (anterior).

Hippocampus

A nucleus inside the temporal lobe associated with learning and memory.

Hypotalamus

Part of the diencephalon. Regulates biological drives with pituitary glands.

Limbic System

A loosely defined network of nuclei involved with learning and emotion.

Motor Strip

"Primary Motor Cortex"


A strip of cortex just in front of the central sulcus that is involved with motor control.
