Phineas Gage And Cognitive Psychology

The brain is the part where it controls mostly of our human behaviours, memory and judgements. However, it’s not the whole brain doing all of these actions, each part of the brain has its respective functions and use. The brain is a part of the central nervous system and it can be classified into the hindbrain, midbrain, the forebrain and the brain stem right below the brain. Inside the midbrain, there is the cerebral cortex which consists of the temporal, occipital, parietal and frontal lobe. Their functions are processing auditory information; processing visual information; processing sensory information and order complex cognitive behaviours respectively. Same inside the midbrain, there is the limbic system which consists of the thalamus, hypothalamus, the corpus callosum, the hippocampus and the amygdala. Their functions are directing incoming information to the cerebrum from receptors; maintaining homeostasis; connecting the left and right side of the brain, retrieving memory and processing basic emotions such as fear, anger and pleasure. In the grounds of neuroscience and psychology, Phineas Gage contributed a lot to the research of the brain and the functions of each part. However after his frontal lobe was damaged, Phineas Gage was “no longer Gage” when he was just acting like a complete aggressive drunkard who can no longer control his emotions. He is just expressing what he really thinks without any judgement as his frontal lobe was damaged. For instance, when Phineas Gage feels sad or angry, he would express his sadness and furiosity just like how he feels. Furthermore, as the motor area within the frontal lobe is used to execute voluntary muscle movement, Phineas Gage would walk and move in a weird motion, wobbling
