What is biogenesis?

All living things comes from living things.

What is spontaneous generation?

An old belief that living thing could arise from non-living things.

What were some of the experiments to prove spontaneous generation wrong?

Redi: Meat & Flies

Spallanzi: broth boiled/bacteria

Pasteur: Won a prize to clear up spontaneous generation

When did the sun approx. begin?

5 billion years

When did the Earth approx. appear?

4 billions years

What is radioactive decay?

Decay of uranium isotopes in rock crystals that help us find the age of organisms.

What was Oparin's theory of the Origin of Life?

- Atmosphere of Earth first contained ammonia, H2-, water vapor, & compounds of hydrogen and carbon. (Methane)

What did Oparin's theory say about amino acids & water?

High temps. possibly made amino acids & the Earth cooled, water condensed, & formed lakes & seas.

For Oparin's theory, what does it say about oxygen & first cells?

Very little oxygen existed, probably an anaerobic environment. First were probably prokaryotes, small, heterotrophs using organic molecules from environments. (Spontaneously formed.)

What are archeabacteria?

Unicellular bacteria that live in harsh environments. Oxygen probably damaged the first unicellular organisms but a few oxygen bonded to some organisms to form aerobic organisms.

When was evidence of photosynthesis first predicted?

3 billions years

When did eukaryotes show up?

Possibly between 1.5 - 2 billions years ago.

Difference between ancient prokaryotes and eurkaryotes?

Larger, DNA organized in chromosomes & membrane surrounded.
