What is digestion? |
Digestion is the breakdown of food |
Name the 5 stages of feeding/ nutrition |
Indigestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, egestion |
Explain the 5 stages of feeding in specific order |
Indigestion: food is taken into the mouth Digestion: the breaking down of food Absorption: the passing of nutrients into the blood Assimilation: cells take nutrients from the blood Egestion: undigested food passed out of the body |
What is the function of the mouth? |
The mouth carries out physical digestion (using teeth) and chemical digestion (using enzyme amylase) |
What is the function of the oesophagus? |
It is a muscular tube which pushes the food down to your stomach by peristalsis |
What is the function of stomach? |
It stores food for 3-4 hours. It has hydrochloric acid which softens food and kills bacteria |
What is the function of the liver? |
It makes the bile which breaks down food |
What is the function of the pancreas? |
It makes enzymes which digests food |
What is the function of the first part of the small intestine? |
It completes the breakdown of food |
What is the function of the second part of the small intestine? |
It allows the food to be absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream |
What is the function of the large intestine? |
It takes water back into the bloodstream |
What is the function of the rectum? |
It stores faeces |
What is physical digestion? |
It is the breakdown of food using mechanical methods. Occurs in the mouth; teeth breaks down food |
What is chemical digestion? |
It is the breakdown of food using enzymes. Saliva amylase which breaks down starch |
What is an enzyme? |
It is a chemical produced by the body which speeds up chemical reactions without being used up in the reaction |
What is an amylase? |
The enzyme amylase acts on starch to produce a producing sugar called maltose |
Name the four types of teeth |
Incisors, canines, premolars, molars |
Name the functions of the four types of teeth |
Incisors: cut and slice food Canines: grip and tear food Premolars: chew, crush, and grind food Molars: also chew, crush and grind food |
