Atomic Structure

The structure of an atom.

Element

A group of atoms with the characteristics.

Compound

When you bond two or ore elements together.

What three particle (parts) that an atom is made up of?

Protons, Neutrons, Electron

Proton

A positively charged particle

Neutron

A particle with no charge.

Electron

A negatively charged particle.

Atomic Weight

Weighted average of the number of protons and neutrons in an element.

Isotopes

Elements that vary in the number of atoms.

Nucleus of the atoms

The protons and neutrons that are together in the middle of an atom.

Radioactive

When isotopes are gaining neutrons they will lose an electron.

How many electrons go into the first orbital?

2

How many electrons go into the second orbital?

8

Name the steps in the scientific method.

1.Observation

2.Questions

3.Hypothesis

4.Predictions

5.Test/Experiments

6.Conclusions

Observation

Can be seen in nature.

Questions

We form these to help explain our observations.

Hypothesis

An educated "guess" or a prediction based on observations and knowledge of the topic

Inductive reasoning

Take specific observations or questions and make generalized statements.

Prediction

Your specific belief about the scientific idea.

Deductive reasoning

Taking the general statements of the hypothesis and predicting specific results.

Variables

Factors which effect the outcomes of the experiment.

Independent Variable

The variables that can be changed in a given model or equation.

Dependent Variable

The variables that result from other variables.

Positive control

The dependent variable that you are testing for.

Negative control

Will never have the variable your testing for.

Experimental group

The group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested.

Controlled group

Does not receive the test variable.

Bias

A predetermined idea by the scientist or by the participants of what the outcome of the experiment should be.

What is a placibo?

A sugar pill

Double-blind experiments

Where neither the scientist nor the participants are aware of who is in the control group and who is in the experimental group.

Therory

The facts that were once thought to be unrelated.

What are the 7 characteristics of life forms?

1. Living things are composed of cells

2. Living things have different levels of organization

3. Living things use energy

4. Living things respond to their environment

5. Living things grow and develop

6. Living things reproduce

7. Living things adapt to their environment

A group of cells that perform a common function

Tissue

A group of tissues that perform a common function.

Organ

A group of organs that perform a common function.

Organ system

Any complete living thing

Organism

The steady state of the organism

Homeostasis

What is a complex set of responses?

Behavior

What is the ordered formation or new cells?

Cell division

What is the increase in the size of a cell?

Cell enlargement

The producing of offspring without the use of gametes?

Asexual reproduction

What is the production of offspring by the joining of sex cells?

Sexual reproduction
