Trapezius muscle
• Origin: along midline between the external occipital protuberance and the spinous process of T12
• Insertion: spine of the scapula, acromion of scapula, and clavicle • FXN: moves and controls the scapula a. Superior: occipital bone/ cervical spine, F: elevation of scapula b. Middle: horizontally upper thoracic, F: retraction of scapula c. Inferior: lower thoracic, F: depression and scapular rotation glenohumeral joint • inNervation: spinal accessory nerve |
Latissimus Dorsi muscle
• O: Thoracolumbar facia and medial aspects of iliac crest
• I: Neck of the humerus • F: pulls the shoulder into into adduction and slightly into extension • N: Thoracodorsal nerve (C6-8) |
Lumbar Triangle
• Bounded by the latissimus dorsi, external abdominal oblique, and iliac crest
• Common site for lumbar herniation |
External Abdominal Oblique
• O: lower ribs
• I: iliac crest lateral to the origin of the latissimus dorsi |
Nuchal Ligament
• O: runs from external occipital protuberance and T2/T3 spinous process
• Connects each cervical vertebrae |
Greater Occipital Nerve
• O: posterior ramus of C2
F: cutaneous innervation |
Spinal Accessory Nerve (Cranial Nerve XI)
• O: Skull
• I: trapezious muscle underneath the sternocleidomastoid muscle F: innervates trapezious |
Levator Scapulae Muscle
• O: transverse processes of C1-C4
• I: superiomedial border of the scapula • F: rotating the scapula upward (lifting axe) (lift=elevate) • N: dorsal scapular nerve |
Rhomboid Major Muscle
• O: T2-T5
• I: between the scapular spine and the inferior angle of the scapula • F: scapula rotates downward (using axe) • N: dorsal scapular nerve |
Rhombiod Minor Muscle (more superior of the two)
• O: nuchal ligament and C7-T1
• I: scapular spine? • F: scapula rotates downward • N: dorsal scapular nerve |
Serratus Posterior Inferior Muscle
• O: spinous process of T11-L2
• I: attaches last 3 of 4 ribs of costal angle • F: depresses ribs N: intercostal nerves- T8-T11 |
Serratus posterior superior muscle
• O: arisese through an aponeurosis from nuchal ligament of spinous process of C7-T2
• I: costal angles of ribs 2-5 • F: elevates ribs N: ventral rami of spinal nerves (intercostal nerve) T1-T4 |
Triangle of Auscultation
1. Lateral border of the trapezious
2. Superior border of the latissimus dorsi 3. Medial edge of the scapula FXN: provides good auscultation area |
thoracodorsal nerve
innervates the latissimus dorsi
