What is the Coccyx?

The coccyx is the human "tailbone," a remnant of the tail that other vertebrate animals have.

What is the Thoracic vertebrae?
|
There body is somewhat heart shaped and has two facets on each side which recieve the heads of the ribs.

What is the Lumbar Vertebrae?
|
They have massive block like bodies and short, hatchet-shaped spinous processes.

What is the Sacrum?
|
The sacrum is formed by the fusion of five vertebrae. It inferiorly connects with the coccyx.

What are fontanels?
|
These are the fibrous membranes connecting the cranial bones in the fetal skull.

What is the anterior fontanel?
|
The anterior fontanel is the largest fontanel in the front part of the fetal skull.

What is the posterior fontanel?
|
The posterior frontanel is the smaller trinangle frontanel in the back part of the fetal skull.

What do fontanels do?
|
They allow the fetal skull to be compressed slightly during birth.
|

Why are frontanels flexible?
|
Because they are flexible, they allow the infant's brain to grow during the later part of pregnancy and early infancy.

How is the fetal skull different than the adult skull?
|
The infants face is very small compared to the size of the cranium, but the skull as a whole is large compared to the infant's body length.
