  • Back
axial skeleton
consists of the skull, vertebral column, and the ribcage
atlanto-axial joint
articulation between the atlas (C1) and axis (C2); permits us to shake our heads "no"
How many cervical vertebra do you have?
seven
atlanto-occipital joint
articulates between the occipital condyles and the atlas; permits us to nod our heads "yes".
odontoid process
(Dens) C2-Most distinct feature of the axis. The dens acts as a pivot for rotation of both the atlas and the skull.
Kyphosis
Hunchback-often results from osteoporosis.
Lordosis
Swayback-stomach pushed anteriorly. Associated with pregnancy or obesity.
Scoliosis
Most common spinal curvature deformity. Abnormal lateral cuvature of spine.
Thoracic vertebrae
(T1-T12)Form superior regions of the back. The 12th thoracic vertebra articulates inferiorly w/ the L1.
Lumbar vertebrae
(L1-L5) Form the small of your back. L5 articulates inferiorly with the sacrum
Sacrum
(S1-S5) fused into a single bony structure.
Coccyx
"Tailbone"-(Co1-Co4) The coccygeal vertebrae starts to unite during puberty. In later years the coccyx also may fuse to the sacrum.
Fontanels
"Soft spots" on a baby's head- Fibrous membrane remnants that are not yet ossified.
Hyoid bone
Slender, curved bone located inferior to the skull bwtn the mandible and the larynx (voice box).**Does not articulate with any other bone in the skeleton.**
Name the three tiny ear bones called auditory ossicles.
Malleus, incus, & stapes
What foramen does the dentist aim for when giving a shot?
Madibular foramen
Paranasal sinuses
Ethmoidal, frontal, maxillary, and sphenoidal sinuses. Air filled chambers that open in to the nasal cavities.
What bone forms the inferior part of the nasal septum?
Vomer-Triangular shape-(farming plow)
Which bone provides passageways for the olfactory nerves?
Cribiform plate of the ethmoid bone-cribiform foramina
The sella turcica of the sphenoid bone houses what gland?
Pituitary gland
Sutures
(Seam) immovable fibrous joint that form the boundaries btwn the cranial bones. Wormian bones.
Coronal, Lamdboid, sagittal, & squamosal.
Craniosynostosis
premature fusion/closing of one of more of these cranial sutures.
vertebral column
7 cervical vertebrae
12 thoracic vertebrae
5 lumbar vertebrae
5 fused sacral vertebrae
4 fused coccygeal
functions of the vertebral column
-provide vertebral support
-supporting the weight of the head
-helping to maintain an upright position'
-helping to transfer axial weight to the appendicular skeleton of the lower limbs
-housing and protecting the delicate spinal cord and providing a passageway for spinal nerves connected to the spinal cord
located between the pedicles of adjacent vertebrae are the...
intervertebral foramen which allow a horizontally directed passageway through which spinal verves travel to other parts of the body
one spinous process on a vertebrae opposite the body and two...
transverse processes
transverse processes are for muscle attachment and T1-T12 provide rib attachement
....
