BPR
Business Process Reengineering- Not a transformational process but an operational process of identifying the "business process" from a clean slate and determining how the process can be made more efficient and effective. Usually focused on the supply chain and chain enabling information technology.
Restructuring
Reorganizing the legal, ownership, operational, or other structures of a organization for optimizing reasons: profits, bankruptcy, mergers, spinoffs, government regulations, financing, rebranding.
Downsizing, Rightsizing, Smartsizing; the “ing’s”
The “conscious use of permanent personnel, structural, or strategy changes in an attempt to improve efficiency and/or effectiveness”:
a. Includes layoffs but needs to be coupled with some organizational change usually in reducing the number of products or markets
b. Terminations, attrition, and elimination of positions.
c. Reorganizing lines of authority or business structures.
Suboptimization
Attempting to optimize a unit of a larger system that results in a sub-optimal result for the entire organization.

-disabilities (1990)- reasonable accommodations

Theories of discrimination
Adverse or disparate treatment= an intentional act of discrimination that involves treating an employee or applicant differently because of their membership in a minority group
Example: “Blacks no need apply.”
Adverse or disparate impact= an unintentional practice that is considered discriminatory if they have a disappropriate “adverse impact” on members of a minority group
Example: “People in this geographical location preferred.”
Types of harassment
sexual and racial or ethnic harassment.
Exempt and nonexempt employees
exempt= not covered by FLSA rules
-excluded from minimum wage, overtime regulations, paid a salary not hourly
wage, typically executive, supervisory, professional, or outside sales jobs
non exempt= covered by FLSA rules
must be payed at least minimum wage, must be given over time of at least 1 and
1/2 pay if worked any hours over 40 per week
Independent contractors
Self employed; if a company can tell you when, where, and how to do your job you are an employee not an independent contractor.
Definition of decision making
The process by which managers respond to opportunities and threats (SWOT) by analyzing options and making determinations about specific organizational goals and courses of action.
Structured/programmed decisions
A routine or repetitive decision. Decided based on recognizable and easily identifiable factors. Doesn't require discussion or consideration.
Unstructured/unprogrammed decisions
Involves scenarios that are new and for which there are no proven answers to use as a guide.

DSS
Decision Support System- computer system designed to provide assistance in determining and evaluating alternative courses of action.
Delphi Technique
1. Questionaire is developed and sent out to numerous people
2. Answers are received and a summary is made.
3. Process is repeated until some conclusion has been made
Likert scale
converts qualitative responses to quantitative data or measurable values
-use of scale with 5-7 responses
-ranges from strongly disagree to strongly agree with middle response as neither
-generally limited to 5-9 questions
-characterize respondents by attributes (age, economic status, education, etc)
Test of homogeneity

Statistical process control
is a method of quality control, which uses statistical methods. SPC is applied in order to monitor and control a process. Monitoring and controlling the process ensures that it operates at its full potential. Line functions= (opposite of staff functions)
is a primary business activity that negatively affects income or the customer experience if it is interrupted. Line functions vary between businesses. These functions are directly related with the objectives of the enterprise.
areas of an organization associated with its daily operations such as purchasing, manufacturing, and selling.
Staff functions
a secondary business activity that supports the line functions of a business to achieve the objectives. In business management, staff functions are usually defined as all functions that are not line functions. The nature of this function is advisory. The people belonging to this function investigate, research, and give advice to their line managers.
