Wilhelm wundt |
Father of psychology Made the first ever lab dedicate d to psychology Introspection-the breaking down of conscious experience Analysed in terms of its components His work paved the way for controlled researching mental process |
The behaviourist approach |
Interested in studying behaviour that is observed and measured Vague and difficult to measure Related in lab experiments to get more control Darwin’s theory suggests animals can replace humans |
Classical conditioning-Ivan Pavlov |
Learning through association Dogs can be conditioned to salivate right the sound is present at the same time as the food Dogs learnt to associate the sound with the food and would salivate Pavlov shows a neural response (bell) can come to elicite a conditioned response through association |
Operant conditioning -Skinner |
Learning is an active process 3 consequences to behaviour +positive reinforcement - rewarded +negative reinforcement-avoids something unpleasant +punishment-unpleasant consequence Experiment +Rat activated the lever -received reward -likely to repeat |
The behaviourist approach(AO3) |
Able to replicate info Influential in the development of psychology as a scientific discipline-more credibility Real life application + operant conditioning -prisons +classical conditioning -phobias Benefits Less effort from patients Suitable for patients who lack insight

Social learning theory |
we learn through observation and imitation of others’ behaviour. |
Stages of the social learning theory |
Attention: The individual needs to pay attention to the behaviour and its consequences and form a mental representation of the behaviour. Retention: Storing the observed behaviour in LTM where it can stay for a long period of time Reproduction: The individual must be able to reproduce the observed behaviour. Motivation: Individuals must expect to receive the same positive reinforcements (vicarious reinforcement) for imitating the observed behaviour that they have seen the model receiving. |
